Mostly drainage systems: P40 million in projects to be implemented

Jean Marvette A. Demecillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — With the rainy season anticipated to persist until next month, the Cebu City’s Department of Engineering and Public Works will implement at least P40 million worth of infrastructure projects in different barangays in the city.

These projects include a P6.4-million concrete pavement with drainage system and continuing road concreting in Barangay Banilad, a P8.9-million concrete pavement along Salinas Drive in Barangay Lahug, and a P12.8-million concrete pavement with drainage system at Kamagong Street in Barangay Lahug.

Other included projects are another P5.6-million concrete pavement in Barangay Kamputhaw, a P3.6-million parking lot in Barangay Ermita, and a P4.4-million drainage system from Sitio Maharlika to V. Urgello Street in barangays Sambag 1 and Sambag 2.

Yesterday, the City Council approved six resolutions of Councilor Jerry Guardo who sponsored the measures authorizing Mayor Tomas Osmeña to sign the contract with different contractors.

Guardo, chairman of the City Council’s committee on infrastructure, moved for the approval of the resolutions that were approved without objection.

“Section 22, Paragraph c of Republic Act 7160 otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991 provides, that no contract may be entered into by the local chief executive in behalf of the local government unit without prior authorization by the local Sanggunian concern,” read a portion of the approved measures.

In the resolutions, Guardo said the DEPW forwarded to the city’s Bids and Awards Committee-Infrastructure to bid out the projects. After the bidding, BAC-Infra declared the winning bidders of the specific projects as Tuason Construction, WIN Construction, ARQ Builders, E.V. Caballero Construction, and V.O. Chupuico Construction.

Guardo said the City Legal Office’s opinion was already sought whether or not the contract is valid and enforceable. He added that the legal office already issued a favorable recommendation for the City Council to pass the resolution authorizing Osmeña to sign the contract with the winning bidders. — BRP (FREEMAN)
