CEBU, Philippines — At least 700 security personnel will be deployed for the solemn procession, Walk with Mary, today to ensure zero cases of robbery and to prevent atrocities.
Chief Inspector Wilbert Parilla, chief of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Operations Branch, told reporters that the security personnel are from the police, the military and non-government agencies.
They have conducted initial bomb assessment from the Our Lady of Guadalupe church to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño using a bomb sniffing dog.
“By 2 a.m., we will deploy our K-9 units to make sure that the procession route is safe and our policemen will be in the area to assist and ensure that everyone is safe,” Parilla said.
Non-uniformed cops will also be in the vicinity.
All station chiefs were directed to revisit their rogue’s gallery so they can easily spot them if they are present during the solemn procession.
Parilla also advised devotees to leave valuables at home and wear simple clothing to avoid attracting lawless elements.
He urged the public to remain vigilant during the Sinulog revelries in order to suppress any form of terror attack amid the heightened alert due to the recent spate of violence allegedly perpetrated by communist rebels.
“Still, even with the presence of the police, we urged the public to remain vigilant for an orderly and peaceful Sinulog,” he said.
However, Parilla assured that there is no imminent threat monitored.
“There is no imminent threat of any form of atrocities but we are not complacent as bomb activity and stampede are the top scenarios that may occur during these activities,” he said. — MBG (FREEMAN)
