Man burns himself due to marital spat
CEBU, Philippines — A 43-year-old man took his own life by setting himself on fire inside his residence in Barangay Apas, Cebu City Wednesday morning over alleged marital problems.
Victim Roberto Elegino, a shoe repairman, sustained second degree burns in the different parts of his body after pouring gasoline to himself.
Case Investigator Police Officer 3 Victor Ato said that there was no foul play and considered the incident as suicide.
Police, however, are still looking into possibilities that the case was caused by a marital spat involving the victim’s wife and a neighbor.
Mabolo Police Station Chief Clark Ariola said the victim's daughter said her parents had a verbal argument around 8 a.m. last Wednesday.
Thirty minutes later, the victim went to the bathroom carrying a container with gasoline.
It was then that the other family members noticed something was burning inside the bathroom.
The victim's family forcibly opened the door and also asked the neighbors to help in dousing off the fire.
Emergency personnel took the victim to the nearest hospital for immediate medical attention.
However, around 4:45 p.m. yesterday, someone who identified himself as the brother-in-law of the victim, notified the station that Elegino did not survive the burns.
At present, the remains of the victim are being attended to by the family members, who are looking into filing charges against the wife and her alleged paramour. —/GAN (FREEMANNEWS)
