Chilling effect on citizenry: Killing of “asset” sows fear in city

Iris Mariani B. Algabre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Informants have made themselves scarce in Talisay City following the recent death of a police asset.

This prompted Chief of Police Emerson Dante to remind that if residents want to change in their environment for good, they should be brave enough to continue sending them information.

“Nagdadalawang isip na sila na magbigay nang info sa amin. Sabi ko nga sa kanila, kung pababayaan natin ang masama lalong lumalala sila, maglilipana sila,” he said.

He said the hesitation surfaced after the shooting to death of a certain "Kenyar", who was gunned down infront of Gaisano Fiesta Mall in Barangay Tabunok Thursday dawn.

Dante believed that it drug personalities were behind the killing for the victim to stop giving police information. Because of it, he said, a few concerned citizens have refrained from cooperating with them.

He reminded that instead of cowering in fear, police informants should be more careful.

“Constant reminder is doble ingat.  The best way is to pray at maging alisto kasi sa bawat operation ang asset ay delikado ang buhay nila,” Dante said.

He also reminded that the essence of a life well lived is that where a citizen is able to uphold what is right.

“Mawala man tayo sa mundo, at least nasa tama tayo,” he said. (FREEMAN)
