Victim active in anti-drug fight, Councilman killed inside home
CEBU, Philippines - A barangay councilman who has been active in their place’s anti-drug abuse council was shot dead inside his house in Barangay Luca, Balamban, Cebu Wednesday evening.
The victim, whom the police identified as Cornelio Yntig Pepito, 64, suffered multiple wounds to his body after an unknown assailant fired at him several times using a 9mm pistol.
Milaluna Dayanan, 49, Pepito’s lived in partner, told Balamban police that Pepito was sitting inside their house after having dinner when she heard several gunshots. Dayanan said she did not see the face of the gunman, who was quick to escape through their window.
Responding policemen found at the scene 10 empty shells of a 9mm pistol.
Balamban Police Station chief Ramil Morpos said they were now looking into the possibility that the victim’s active involvement in the anti-drugs campaign in Luca could be the reason behind the attack, especially since Pepito was known for his kindness to his constituents.
Morpos said he, too, was saddened by the death of the councilor because he was a great help in eradicating drugs in Luca. "Nasakitan gyod ko kay motabang gyod to siya namo,” he said.
Morpos assured they would make sure that justice would prevail, especially if they establish that drugs caused Pepito’s death.
Pepito, he said, was not only active in the Anti-Drug Abuse Council but was also aggressive in helping the police in anti-drug campaigns.
Morpos said they are tracking four drug personalities as possible suspects in the death of Pepito. (FREEMAN)
