CEBU, Philippines - A habal-habal driver was killed and his passenger injured in a motorcycle collision with a police officer who was allegedly driving without a license in Talamban Road last Sunday.

Declared dead upon arrival at the Cebu City Medical Center was Mely Mahusay, 45, habal-habal driver, resident of Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City.

His passenger, Jonel Eyac, 30, a resident of Nasipit, Talamban, sustained injuries.

Police Officer 1 Jeremy Amahoy, 25, a resident of Villa Leyson Bacayan, Cebu City, was also confined to CCMC due to his fractured right arm.

Based on investigation, the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) said Mahusay was heading to Cabancalan when Amahoy’s motorcycle appeared in Mahusay’s lane and hit his motorcycle.

Amahoy was travelling along Talamban Road on his way to Villa Leyson.

“Kusog ang dagan (ni Amahoy), dako ang damage,” said Police Officer 3 Chady Jungoy of CITOM.

The two motorcycles collided with great impact resulting to both drivers and Eyac being thrown off and landing on the pavement.

According to Mahusay’s daughter, Judalyn, she learned from CITOM investigators that Amahoy’s fast driving is what caused the incident.

“Ug sa dihang naa jud mga driver nga pasutoy lang’s gibati,” read Judalyn’s post on Facebook.

Jungoy also added that Amahoy was driving without a license and the motorcycle he was driving is registered.

Amahoy will be facing a case of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide with physical injuries and damage to property filed by the Mahusay family yesterday. (FREEMAN)
