Officials wish for “fair” elections

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City acting mayor Edgardo Labella is hoping that this 2016, those seeking for public office will dwell on issues that are relevant to public service rather than engage in character assassination.

Labella, who is seeking reelection for the vice mayoralty post, is also hoping that people will be peace-loving and prayerful, especially that this is an election year.

“People should be peace-loving and prayerful especially that it is going to be an election year. It is my fervent hope that those who will be running for public office will dwell on issues that are relevant to public service rather than engage in mud-slinging and character assassination,” he said when asked of his New Year’s message.

He said that would-be public officials should employ only intellectual and “high-level” strategy of campaigning.

“Bag-ong tuig, bag-ong paglaum… you have to look back and look forward. Look back for all the things that you have done and you failed to do which you could have done. Look forward with optimism, hope and of course coupled with prayers to the Lord God that we will always be placed under His divine shelter,” he said.

At the Capitol, some members of the Cebu Provincial Board are also hoping for a peaceful New Year for their colleagues and constituents.

“May the yuletide season bring us joy, hope and peace especially for us public servants. Whatever political party we belong we should always remember that it is our duty and responsibility to serve our constituents with no political colors,” said Board Member Sun Shimura.

For his part, Board Member Christopher Baricuatro prays for a clean and peaceful 2016 elections.

He said he hopes that all candidates would fight fairly and with respect.

“Everything happens for a reason. I’m fine with any results on our party, as long as it’s for the better good of our bosses (people),” he said in a text message sent to The FREEMAN.

“With hard work and patience, I wish all Cebuanos reach their dreams and aspirations this 2016,” he added.

Shimura is seeking reelection representing the fourth district of the province, while Baricuatro will represent the newly created seventh district. They belong to National Unity Party and Liberal Party, respectively. (FREEMAN)
