Barangay nod just first step in moving trees
CEBU, Philippines – Earth balling Narra trees affected by an ongoing site development in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City will be long with the approval of the barangay only one of many steps to carry the process out.
The Tejero Barangay Council recently approved the transfer of at least 17 trees identified within the site’s perimeter.
After assessment of the trees along Osmeña Boulevard, however, the Cebu City Community Environment and Natural Resources Office said only 11 will be “most likely affected” by the proposed construction of the mall’s entrance and exit.
Of the 11 trees, two are seen fit for earth balling since the other trees measure more than 15 centimeters in diameter and should rather be cut based on the guidelines of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
“Of the 11, only two are less than 15 centimeters in diameter. The rest are less than 30 centimeters. Based on guidelines, only 15 trees and below may be earth balled but if it is more than 15, it’s cutting already,” said DENR spokesperson Dr. Eddie Llamedo.
The DENR Central Office will review the required documents on the request to earth ball the trees.
“The application with the requirements will be forwarded or endorsed to DENR central office as it involves Narra trees, which are considered premium species,” Llamedo said.
“They cannot touch the trees unless there is an explicit clearance from DENR central office and a permit to be issued by DENR-7 regional director,” he said further.
The mall’s project handlers got the endorsement from the Tejero Barangay Council supported through an approved barangay resolution dated September 7, 2015 interposing no objection on earth balling the trees.
“This body firmly believes that if ever the project will be undertaken and completed, there will be job opportunities and employment in the community or barangay for our constituents and the area will also beautify, hence most advantageous to [Tejero residents] and [Cebu City Government,]” reads a portion of the two-page resolution. —/JMO (FREEMAN)
