USP-F gives P100T for capability building of social workers

CEBU, Philippines - A total of P100,000 was turned over by the Graduate School ofSocial Work of the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation to the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office 7 recently.

DSWD-7 regional director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre who received the donation from Dr. Jose G. Mante revealed that the said amount will be used for the capability building of social workers and maybe a scholarship grant (baccalaureate degree and masters) for those interested to take up social work from among the staff.

DSWD being the implementing arm of the government for its social welfare program is a major employer for the school’s Social Work graduates.

In a related development, DSWD Secretary Celia Yangco despite being indisposed sent her keynote message to about 700 social workers during the recently concluded Social Workers Summit held here in Cebu City. She lauded DSWD-7 and USP-F for its concern for the continuing education program of social workers.

The secretary shared to the audience DSWD’s recognition of the value and need for clinical social work interventions in the country.

However, she said, that with the advent of global challenges and the emergence of social issues that impact on our poor population, social workers are also called to reflect on their assumptions, rethink their practices and reexamine priorities. — /MEEV   (FREEMAN NEWS)
