2 dead, 9 hurt in separate road mishaps
CEBU, Philippines - Two lending collectors died after the motorcycle they were riding figured in an accident with a multicab past 1 p.m. yesterday in Barangay Pasil, Santander town.
Vincent Caloscosin, 26, of Tubtubon, Sibulan, Negros Oriental died instantly while Elvis Gutano, 20, of Cantupa, La Libertad, Negros Oriental was pronounced dead at the Oslob District Hospital at 3 p.m. yesterday.
Narciso Enoy, 52, multicab driver, of Santa Catalina, Negros Oriental was brought to a hospital in Dumaguete City for his injuries.
Police Officer 3 Leonixto Solon, investigator, said that Enoy came from Negros on the way to Cebu City to deliver fish.
The collectors were heading towards Liloan, Santander to catch a barge for Negros.
Solon said that the driver of the multicab maneuvered to the opposite lane as he tried to avoid a road pothole.
The multicab hit the motorcycle head on which caused Caloscosin’s instantaneous death. Gutano was brought to the hospital where he was declared dead past 3 p.m.
Enoy was brought to a hospital in Dumaguete City because, according to Solon, Dumaguete is nearer than Cebu City.
Meanwhile, at least eight people, including two minors, were injured after the pickup they were riding overturned while descending the Transcentral Highway in Barangay Cansumoroy, Balamban on Wednesday afternoon.
Glicerio Tribunalo of Mandaue City was driving a Toyota Lite Ace when it encountered a mechanical problem.
The driver’s wife Jovelyn, 36, and son Glicerio III, 5, together with Lenelyn Tamacmol, 30 and daughter Princess Rhian, 4; Susima Claren and son Rhon Ricky 7 and Estila Supilanas, 51, had to be brought to the hospital in Cebu City for medical treatment.
Senior Police Officer 1 Rolando Navarro, traffic investigator, said as the pickup descended the Transcentral Highway in Barangay Cansomoroy, the vehicle’s brakes suddenly malfunctioned.
The driver tried to stop by driving over to the side of the road which caused the pickup to overturn.
All the injured passengers have reportedly been discharged from the hospital. (FREEMAN)
