Yeung’s resort causes flooding in barangay – Corro

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Daanbantayan Mayor Augusto Corro blamed the luxury resort owned by the sister of Cebu fourth district Representative Benhur Salimbangon for the flooding in sitio Bantigue, Barangay Agujo.

According to Corro, since Kandaya Resort of Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung was fenced, the flow of water during heavy rains has been restricted, resulting to floods on the road.

While a fencing permit was issued during the previous administration, Corro claimed that he sent three letters to the resort management to have the problem addressed, but only the third one got a reply.

“Selfish g’yud kaayo ang management; ingon sila they have already coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways,” he said.

Corro said Yeung is only looking at the business interest since her brother has connections with the DPWH.

Salimbangon said the DPWH has been undertaking drainage projects along the national highways in the entire province of Cebu.

He said five areas in Daanbantayan were previously flooded and DPWH is now working for the funding in the amount of P70 million to solve the problem.

“Wala ko kasabot ngano’ng iapil niya ang Kandaya. Hagbay pa na ang koral, ipahulat niya ang DPWH,” Salimbangon said, referring to Corro.

Corro alleged that Salimbangon and former Daanbantayan mayor Maria Luisa Loot are behind the move of the majority of the town council members who oppose the town’s intention to avail of a World Bank grant for 16 local government units in northern Cebu affected by super typhoon Yolanda.

“Angay unta motabang siya (Salimbangon). He is part of it nga pababagan na (grant),” added Corro.

The Municipal Development Council was supposed to endorse P885 million worth of projects under the WB-Support for Strategic Local Development and Investment Project but the proposal was turned down by seven of the nine members of the town council.

Corro said if the 20 percent kickback, at around P180 million, of the total grant is what the opposition bloc fears to go through his pocket, they could implement the projects otherwise he would run against Salimbangon for Congress.

He stressed that if he just wants money, he would have not entered politics since he could earn almost P60 million in three years abroad.

“Mahuman na lang ni panerbisyo nako maski usa ka daku wala’y mosulod sa akong bulsa. I would like to challenge myself nga limpyo g’yud ko pagsud nako sa politika. All what I want is fulfillment, service to the people,” Corro stressed.

The mayor added that once the drainage, the solid waste management projects and the resettlement housing project for Yolanda victims are implemented, he may not run again in the next election. —(FREEMAN)
