Repair of Sibonga bridge 70% done

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways reported that the installation of the temporary steel structure at the Dumlog Bridge in Sibonga town is now 70 percent complete as the agency continues to expedite the work to beat the deadline, which is before the Sinulog Festival.

Elvis Calunod, DPWH-7 maintenance division chief, said most components are now in place and they are now working on the installation of the deck system.

He added that the bridge panels have already reached the other abutment, the end of the bridge span.

“Kaluoy sa Dios atong panels karon nakatabok na sa pikas, sa abutment B,” he told reporters over the phone.

DPWH, he said, is still aiming to complete the installation works and make the temporary steel bridge passable by January 17.

Calunod expressed hopes that the weather would permit them to complete the project.

He, however, said that they are preparing the gears in anticipation of the possible effects brought about by the looming weather disturbance that may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this week.

“Nag-andam na man ta ana, labi na ron nga nag-uwan-uwan. 24/7 gihapon ta,” he said.

The steel bridge has 20-tons capacity, the same as to that of the original bridge.

Dumlog Bridge in Sibonga became impassable after it collapsed due to tropical storm Seniang.

Buses and trucks are using the diversion route in Lindogon, Sibonga, which is open to light vehicles from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and to heavy and large vehicles from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

This traffic scheme remains in effect while installation for the temporary steel bridge is ongoing. (FREEMAN)
