CEBU, Philippines - The Salcon Power Corporation and the City of Naga inaugurated a modern public library equipped with computers and Internet connection at the city’s St. Francis Ocean Park.
“Knowledge is the key to liberating our people from poverty. It is a legacy that would improve the lost and life of people,” said SPC chief executive officer and president Dennis Villa-real in his speech during the ceremonial blessing and inauguration.
The library sits in a 188-square meter property near the city’s famous baywalk.
Aside from the computer laboratory which has Internet connection, it also has a children’s section where kids can sit down and enjoy reading books, a general reference reading section for all ages and a corner for people with disabilities.
The City Council gave their approval for the library in February this year, which made way to the signing of the memorandum of agreement allowing SPC and the city to undertake the project.
The agreement allows SPC to build the library and fill it with the necessary equipment and materials while the city provides the location and will shoulder the facility’s maintenance.
“It is my hope that under the support of the City Government of Naga and all our public officials, this project will create a ripple effect to build the consciousness that knowledge is power,” Villareal said.
“SPC will continue reaching out to give its share in the attainment of an improved literacy rate through this information center,” read its statement. — Liv G. Campo/ATO (FREEMAN)
