CEBU, Philippines - A 32-year-old driver died on the spot while a civilian got injured after an unidentified man shot the former in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City past midnight yesterday.
Roel Nerosa, a native of Barangay Ikan, Sibonga, Cebu, sustained gunshot wound on his right chest that led to his death.
Patricio Bonghanoy, 43, was hit on his left leg and was rushed to Cebu City Medical Center for medical treatment.
Bonghanoy, who is a habal-habal driver and a resident of V. Colina Street in Sitio Magtalisay, Barangay Mabolo, was reportedly standing and waiting for passengers when the shooting incident happened.
Nerosa was found already lifeless lying on his back.
The police recovered from him a black wallet containing the driver’s license and cash amounting to P427.
Initial investigation showed that Nerosa was walking along the roadside when an unidentified assailant armed with an unknown firearm suddenly shot the victim several times.
Senior Police Officer 1 Rommel Bancog of the Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section said witnesses testified that the suspect was already waiting beside the electric post adjacent to the nearby burger station.
The gunman reportedly then shot Nerosa just when he passed by the burger station.
Bancog said the suspect then proceeded to a motorcycle waiting near the crime scene and immediately fled from the area.
Witnesses alleged that the gunman was wearing a black jacket while the two suspects who were onboard the motorcycle were not wearing helmets when they escaped.
Since there were no empty shells recovered from the crime scene, Bancog believed that a revolver was used by the assailant.
The police are still conducting further investigation on indentifying the suspect and the motive of shooting.
The body of Nerosa was brought to Saint Francis Funeral Homes on N. Bacalso Street, Cebu City for autopsy. — (FREEMAN)
