Veco briefs students on right power use

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Generation on power, the Visayan Electric Company conducted yesterday an energy forum conservation campaign dubbed “Cebu Unplugged” at the Sacred Heart-School-Ateneo de Cebu in Canduman, Mandaue City.

SHS-AdC acting high school principal Roberto Joseph Galvan told the students to be responsible in using limited resources, especially electricity.

“I hope that at the end of the forum you will be able to share what you have learned on how to conserve and use energy efficiently,” he said.

Theresa Sederiosa, VECO reputation management manager, said Cebu Unplugged was not just an energy conservation campaign but also an effort to change habits and lifestyle.

“It only takes 21 days to form a habit,” she said.

In the same forum, VECO distributed flyers detailing eight ways how to avoid crisis. These were the switching off of computers and unplugging them when not in use, and use of one gadget at a time to avoid charging all gadgets at the same time; watching only the favorite TV program and not switching on the television while doing other things.

Taking a break from the gadgets; switching off of lights when they are not in use and not leaving a trail of lights open when there is no one in the room; keeping the refrigerator always closed; being mindful of the clothes in the laundry; using a fan instead of an airconditioning unit; unplugging all appliances like fans, TV and radio when they are not in use.

“We want all of you to become energy scouts and help our future generation,” Sederiosa told  the first year to fourth year students.

Engr. Richard Alfafara, VECO energy efficiency specialist, talked on how to measure electric energy, while  Engr. Kira Katrina Ma, VECO quality assurance department manager, also talked on basic electrical safety.  (FREEMAN)
