Man who hacked 2 nuns charged

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Criminal charges were filed in court against the 26-year-old man who scaled his way Saturday into a monastery in Barangay Sacsac, Consolacion and hacked at least two Franciscan sisters.

The Cebu Provincial Prosecutor’s Office indicted Romilo Tampus, 26, for frustrated and attempted murder. State prosecutor Al Rey Ouano found probable cause to hold Tampus for trial after he waived his right to avail of a preliminary investigation.

The prosecutor recommended P120,000 bail for attempted murder and another P200,000 for frustrated murder.

Tampus, resident of Barangay Tulo-tulo, Consolacion, was arrested by the police after he went on a hacking spree at the Ave Maria Franciscan Sisters Monastery Saturday morning.

Sisters Fe Cañete and Anabelle Macas were injured during the incident. Cañete suffered a hack wound in her back while Macas sustained several hack wounds in the head, neck and different parts of her body.

Cañete could have also suffered severe injuries had she not able to run and ask for help. After hacking the two nuns, Tampus went home where he was arrested by the responding policemen.

The family of the suspect claimed he was suffering from “mental illness.’ Despite the family’s claim, the police filed the criminal complaints before the prosecutor’s office. (FREEMAN)
