Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Two casino workers riding on a motorcycle died on the spot while a pedestrian was injured when a Toyota Corolla hit them yesterday morning along Salinas Drive in Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

The victims identified as Gaudioso Bontilao of Balamban and Joselito Lopez, resident of Capitol Site, Cebu City were on their way home at 6:30 a.m. when the car driven by Gerard dela Cruz, 28, hit the motorcycle they were riding on.

A pedestrian identified as Dany Vale, 37, of Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City was also injured during the accident.

Both Bontilao and Lopez are employed with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation as slot machine operators assigned at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Barangay Lahug.

Dela Cruz was on his way to fetch his father, who is also working at the Casino, when the accident happened.

Initial investigation shows that dela Cruz was driving under the influence of liquor.

The suspect reportedly admitted to traffic investigators that he came from a drinking session with his friends before heading to fetch his father at the Casino.

He claimed to have fallen asleep while driving and swerved to the opposite lane of the road where he collided with the motorcycle of the two Pagcor employees and hit the pedestrian.

Bontilao and Lopez were thrown off the motorcycle causing severe head injuries.

The suspect was brought to the Cebu City Integrated Traffic Operations Management office where he is now detained. He will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injury. — (FREEMAN)
