DepEd reminds schools anew to have simple graduation rites

CEBU, Philippines - With some schools still set to have their graduation rites by next month, the Department of Education-Cebu City Division is reminding anew primary and secondary schools to have simple graduation rites for the parents to spend lesser money.

Danilo Gudelosao, DepEd Cebu City division education program supervisor, stressed that no lavish celebrations should be made and everything should be kept simple.

He said though that if there is an agreement between the parents and the school to have a contribution for the graduation, the department would allow it.

“Basta gikasabotan sa parents ok ra na siya pero kinahanglan dili gyud  expensive, dili gihapon lavish basta kay gikasabotan nga adunay silay gipirmahan nga resolution, mo-acknowledge ang DepEd ana pero still, atong tinguhaon na ato silang checkon kun dili ba sila sobra ra,” Gudelosao said.

The department has been monitoring schools asking for contribution from the parents.

Based on the DepEd Cebu City’s records, 17 districts and seven districts have so far submitted a report to DepEd on their expenses.

Gudelosao said that six schools did not ask for any contribution while some asked for a certain amount like P100 and below.

According to Gudelosao, the national government has allocated a budget to each school for their Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses which they may use in financing school activities like the graduation rites. The amount would vary for each school, depending on the number of enrollees.

“Depende man gud na sa enrollment kay naa man tay per student capita, P200 plus for the elementary niya P500 plus para sa high school.  Mao nay formula mao nay ihatag kada bata i-multiply sa ilang enrollment divided by 10, mao na ilang MOOE” he explained.

If in case they will notice schools asking for too much contribution, he said they will immediately call the attention of the principal.

“Magsugod man gyud na  kun naay ginikanan  nga mo-file og complaint, amo ng imbestigaron,” he said, adding that in the presence of a resolution between the parents and school of a contribution, they will still determine where the contributions would go.

For the schedule of graduation there is a possibility that some schools will end after the month of April considering that some schools encountered problems in their schedule due to the various calamities that hit the country last year.

“Pero ang official closing nato sa school year is March 31, kay naka make-up class naman ta,” he added.  — (FREEMAN)
