Talisay gets P4M for quake rehab

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City Government has received P4.3 million in cash assistance from the National Housing Authority for its rebuilding efforts after the October 15 earthquake.

City Treasurer Emma Macuto, City Assessor Alma Abellanosa, and City Local Housing Office Chief  Lagrimas Abarquez accepted the check from the NHA central office.

City Administrator John Yre de los Reyes said the amount would be used to procure more lots to serve as relocation sites for the city’s many homeless families.

“The money will be used to purchase lots to be converted into relocation sites for our urban poor families. Dako na kaayo ni siya’g matabang (This is already a big help),” said de los Reyes.

The city has over 11,000 families registered as urban poor or those who have no lot properties under their names.

When the magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the Cebu and Bohol, Talisay was among those which were affected.

The City Hall, some public infrastructure, and private residences suffered damage, prompting the city government to declare the entire city under a state of calamity after the calamity.

De los Reyes said for this year, his father Mayor Johnny V. de los Reyes is focusing on helping homeless residents to have their own houses, providing jobs to the people, and making basic services available to the public.— /RHM (FREEMAN)
