Pre-school at Tent City mulled

CEBU, Philippines - Children who have survived the wrath of super typhoon Yolanda and are temporarily housed at the Tent City will soon go back to their study.

The Movement for Livable Cebu is scheduled to start a pre-school at the Tent City next week. The movement’s lead convenor, Marc Canton, said they will be hiring two teachers who are actually among the 194 survivors now occupying the facility.

“We will bring school to them,” said Canton in a press conference.

Canton said an agency has also committed to provide the school supplies for the children.

The teachers will teach the kids two hours every day from 2 pm to 4 pm.

The teaching will continue for as long as the children and their respective families stay at the Tent City. The two teachers are just among the survivors who were given jobs by the city government and by concerned non-government organizations.

Of the 194 individuals, occupying Tent City, 31 have already secured jobs here in Cebu while 10 of the families have already expressed that they wanted to return to Leyte.

They are now working either as hotel staff, call center agents, and in restaurants.

There will also be a scheduled job-matching for the interested survivors, while those who are still unemployed will undergo free livelihood and skills trainings. The victims will also undergo another stress debriefing.

The city government, with several agencies facilitating, has committed to provide interventions on the survivors so they could prepare physically and financially before they leave Tent City. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
