Ukay-ukay owner gives some clothes for free

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - After news spread out that a mountain of used clothes are sold in Cordova town for a very low price, the owner of the "Ukay-ukay" has decided to distribute some of the garments for free instead of selling it to the public.

Last Saturday, at least six sacks of used clothes were given to the National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL) Cebu Chapter as part of its outreach program in an island in barangay Gilutongan, Cordova.

The NMYL, led by Catmon Councilor Earl Tidy Oyas, conducted a feeding program to around 500 kids and the distribution of the used clothes in the barangay in coordination with the office of Cordova Vice Mayor Mary Therese Sitoy-Cho.

Sitoy-Cho said that Cordova Councilor Adrian Godornes, the son-in-law of the owner of the used clothes, facilitated the distribution of the used clothes.

They also distributed notebooks and pencils to around 300 school children of Gilutongan Elementary School.

Madridejos town Councilor Stephen Olingay asked Sitoy-Cho if he could also avail of some used clothes for his constituents who are victims of super typhoon Yolanda in Northern Cebu.

Olingay said he will take care of the transportation of the used clothes to their town Bantayan Island.

Some NMYL officers present at the activity also expressed interest in asking for used clothes to also be distributed to their constituents.

Other NMYL officers who were present during the activity were Councilors Erwin Gica of Dumanjug, Richard Francis Aznar of Talisay City, Jeffrey Anthony Yapha of Pinamungajan, Jeffrey Ceniza of Mandaue City and Aaron Capao Jr. of San Fracisco, Camotes.

Sitoy-Cho assured she will ask Godornes to donate the used clothes especially to towns affected by super typhoon.

She said that the used clothes were really intended for sale.

"Gipanghatag naman na nila kay na problema naman sila asa i-dispose," Sitoy-Cho said.

After Gilutongan, the NMYL also conducted the same activity in Barangay Catarman, Cordova.— (FREEMAN)
