Sinulog 2014 produced less trash than last year

CEBU, Philippines - This year's Sinulog celebration produced less garbage compared to last year, according to the Department of Public Services.

DPS head Rolando Ardosa told reporters that last year they collected 187 tons of garbage, but this year it only reached 174 tons.

Republic Act No. 9003 prohibits littering, throwing, dumping of waste in public places, such as roads, sidewalks, canals, esteros or parks, and establishment, or causing or permitting the same. Another section states violators shall be fined not less than P300 but not more than P1,000 or render community service for not less than one day to not more than 15 days, or both.

When Navarro was asked if they will still go after those who littered, he said they suspended the implementation of the law because of the event.

"Gi-suspend kay dili man ta maka-control sa mga tawo," Navarro explained.

For the next year's Sinulog, he hopes that Mayor Michael Rama will no longer allow street vendors to lessen garbage.

Rama commended the DPS, Barangay Environmental Officers and everyone who was part in managing the cleanliness of Cebu City during the Sinulog festivities.

Less earnings

Meanwhile, stall and street vendors reported not making so much in way of income during yesterday's festivities. This was attributed mostly to cloudy skies and moderate rain brought by tropical depression Agaton that lessened the need for items like hats, fans, water and various refreshments.

According to water vendor Jonathan Llanito, his income in this year's Sinulog is much lower compared to last year's because of the cool weather.

"Wa man gud miinit kay naa may bagyo, di pareho last year nga init maong nanginahanglan gyud ang taw og tubig," said Llanito.

Dalia Gabotan, who operates a sidewalk eatery, estimated she made P1,000 less than expected as she had fewer customers.

Rachelle Villarin, a gulaman vendor, also said her income was less, but only by a small percentage.
