Labor group eyes suit vs. police chief

CEBU, Philippines - The Associated Labor Union-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines will file  harassment and coercion complaints against a police chief for allegedly intervening in a peaceful and legal strike against Cebu Country Club.

ALU-TUCP spokesperson Art Barrit said that Mabolo Police chief Ryan Devaras, in the guise of a checkpoint near the club reportedly asked the picketers to leave the premises.

“Police can only intervene if there are commotions at the picket lines, but the strike was very peaceful,” Barrit said.

Devaras said that they received a call from the management that people going inside the club were barred from entering by the picketers.

“We go there to maintain peace and order. We are clearing the driveway kay nag-ali man sila,” said Devaras.

More than 100 caddies launched strike the other day after the management compelled them to accredit themselves with the club for one year.

Barrit said that such move was opposed by the caddies who some of them have been working at the club for more than 30 years.

The management allegedly barred them from entering the club after learning that the caddies have affiliated themselves with ALU-TUCP.

“The strike will continue until the management can seek a temporary restraining order or injunction,” Barrit added.
