Capitol bares activities for PWD Month

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Capitol has lined up several activities this July in observance of the Person with Disability (PWD) Month.

The office of Provincial Board Member Arleigh Jay Sitoy, who chairs the committee on PWDs, will lead the activities in coordination with the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.

Sitoy said that the activities will be participated in by the different PWDs in the entire Cebu Province.

These include PWD Got Talent on July 6, Basketball Tournament on July 7, Jobs Fair on July 13, Art Exhibit on July 14, Iron Man on July 21, and PWD Cares Medical Mission on July 27.

The activity is pursuant to a Provincial Ordinance which was approved on February 21, 2011 entitled, “Declaring the Month of July of Every Year as PWD Month in the Province of Cebu”.

This is also pursuant to Republic Act 9442 otherwise known as the “Magna Carta for Disabled Person” which mandates the full support for the improvement of the total well-being of persons with disabilities and the integration of PWDs into the mainstream society.

Sitoy earlier proposed to declare February as PWD Month, but the Board said it is more fitting to observe the same in July to coincide with the observance of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Month.

The ordinance that made the declaration official also enjoined all component cities and municipalities of the province to coordinate with the provincial government in the implementation of their programs and activities during the PWD month. FPL (FREEMAN)
