CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 through the Environmental Management Bureau has awarded 208 companies, academe, and local government units in Central Visayas in recognition for their efforts on waste pollution control, water energy conversion, resource conservation, and solid waste management.
Of the 208, 11 institutions received the major awards on environmental protection in various categories. These were Robinson’s Place-Dumaguete City for commercial establishment; Energy Development Corporation, Cebu Energy Development Corporation, and National Grid Corporation, all for power and energy; Cebu Holdings Incorporated for realty development.
Also, under industrial manufacturing were FMC Marine Colloids, Philippines Incorporated; CP Kelco Philippines Incorporated, and Taiyo Yuden (Philippines) Incorporated; Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines for food and beverage; and Marco Polo Plaza for hotel and resort.
Two special awards were given to LGU-Dumaguete City and LGU-Bayawan City for establishing septage and sanitary landfill facilities, respectively.
A special citation was presented to the University of Cebu.
During the awarding ceremony which was one of the highlights of the two-day 3rd Environmental Congress held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City, DENR-7 executive director Isabelo R. Montejo said that recognizing their partner industries or companies in pursuing their mandate in protecting the environment and natural resources is an expression of sustaining partnership with them.
The gathering was organized by the DENR 7, EMB 7, and the Pollution Control of the Philippines Incorporated-Region VII Chapter to showcase the best practices and success stories on clean technologies, water and air quality, toxic and hazardous wastes, solid wastes, water energy conversion, and resource conservation.
The said convention also cited 24 companies, mostly mining firms in recognition for their functional multipartite monitoring teams which regularly monitored environmental protection compliance as stated in their environmental compliance certificate.
A total of 170 firms got a certificate of recognition for acquiring a permit to operate on air quality for at least three consecutive periods. (FREEMAN)
