Market Landscaping: Taboan to be senior, child-friendly

CEBU, Philippines - A “senior citizen and child-friendly” landscape plan for a newly-improved Taboan Market is in the works, city market administration revealed.

Market administrator Raquel Arce said this was agreed during the meeting with city administrator Atty. Jose Marie Poblete, and Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW).

The meeting was called a day after Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama personally inspected the market on June 5.

“Gipangayuan ni Atty. Poblete ang architects sa DEPW og (landscape) plan with the concept nga senior citizen and child-friendly, (Atty. Poblete ask the DEPW architects for a plan with a senior citizen and child-friendly concept),” Arce told The FREEMAN.

“I think ang pasabot sa mayor is easy and proper accessibility and proper railings para dili mangadisgrasya ang mga edaran ug mga bata. As you might have noticed, elevated ra ang floor line sa Taboan, dili yano nga matikang, (I think the mayor wants easy and proper accessibility and railings so that the elderly and children will not meet accidents. Taboan has an elevated floor line and is not that accessible),” the city administrator explained.

To achieve this goal, accessibility facilities like ramps will be provided at the market.

“So aron ma-child and senior citizen friendly, ato i-provide ang proper access such as ramps and stairs. Ang proposed landscaping is to make Taboan environmentally conducive. Proper ventilation is also a must para lapos-lapos ang hangin, (To make it child and senior citizen friendly, we will provide proper access such as ramps and stairs. The proposal is to make Taboan environmentally conducive. Proper ventilation is also a must),” Poblete continued.

The landscape design will be presented to him within the week.

“I have given the engineering people about a week to complete the draft plans in design including the estimates for the work. Hope they can give me update by Friday or earlier,” Rama earlier announced in his visit that he wished to showcase the market more, known for its dried fish.

Taboan market rehabilitation project was inaugurated earlier last month giving the Cebuano landmark a new look with illegal structures removed and a parking space provided. —(FREEMAN)
