Corro assures fulfillment of promises

CEBU, Philippines - Daanbantayan mayor-elect Augusto Corro assured that his promises during the campaign will be done.

Corro has at least three promises believed to be the main factor of his victory over outgoing Mayor Ma. Luisa Loot.

These include the eradication of illegal fishing, re-opening of closed cemeteries and to return the waterworks systems under the management of concerned associations in the barangays.

“Those three promises will be surely done,” Corro said.

Corro’s three promises are among the clamor of the residents and major issues brought up against Loot during the campaign.

Illegal fishing activities have been rampant in Daanbantayan for the past years.

Loot created the Daanbantayan Water District and took over various waterworks systems in the barangays.

She also ordered the closure of several public cemeteries following reports of non-compliance of the necessary permits and requirements set by the Department of Health.

Loot dismissed talks that those issues caused her defeat saying that these had been there in the 2010 elections when she won over Corro.

Loot cited too much confidence of her victory and the deficiencies in the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines may have caused her defeat.

Last May 13 elections, Corro garnered 18,101 votes against Loot who got 15,700 votes.

Meanwhile, Corro is set to “cleanse” the municipal hall from non-performing employees on his first month as mayor.

Corro said he received reports that there are employees paid but not actually working.

“Rest assured ang ato patrabahoon motrabaho, (Rest assured that the people we will hire will really work.)” Corro said.

He added that his experience in corporate life shall be applied.

Having been working abroad for the past several years, this is the first time Corro will hold a position in the government.

When he first joined politics, Corro lost to Loot’s son, Provincial Board Member Sun Shimura, in the mayoralty race in 2007. Corro again lost in the 2010 elections when he faced Loot in the mayoralty race.  (FREEMAN)
