DA-7, province mark 2013 as year of rice
CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the provincial government of Cebu celebrate 2013 as the National Year of Rice.
In support of the Presidential Proclamation No. 494 declaring 2013 as the National Year of Rice (NYR), DA regional executive director Angel C. Enriquez and Cebu acting governor Agnes Magpale led other government officials and farmers at a gathering yesterday.
The NYR is part of the government’s bid to achieve rice self-sufficiency beginning this year.
It promotes responsible rice consumption, less rice wastage and productive farming through technologies and policies.
DA-7 OIC Tomasita Cadungog said that unity is the key to reach the goal of rice self-sufficiency.
She said to attain rice-sufficiency, there must be increased production, reduced consumption and reduced losses.
Enriquez recalled that DA-7 received an award last year as one of the top rice-producing regions in the country.
Magpale said that she will lend sufficient budget for DA-7 in order for it to continue with its programs. – (FREEMAN)
