CH stops CPA's fencing of Compaña Maritima

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government prevented Cebu Ports Authority from fencing the Compaña Maritima Building and its adjacent area that used to be berthing place of George and Peter Lines vessels.

Mayor Michael Rama ordered to stop the fencing activity of CPA for lack of the required permit from the Office of the Building Official. The mayor did not like what he observed that CPA started fencing the area adjacent to the newly constructed Senior Citizens Park situated across the City Hall executive building.

“Apilon pa g'yud unta nila sa pagkoral ang karsada nga kaniadto gitawag og Quezon Boulevard nga klaro man kana nga karsada (They would have also included fencing Quezon Boulevard),” the mayor said.

Rama immediately instructed City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete call CPA officials' attention and relay his order to them.

The CPA has started digging several holes and put up signages in the area. The port authority also posted a private security guard.

Poblete said that CPA officials may have listened to Rama's order because fencing activities have been stopped.

Rama earlier asked CPA to allow the city to use the old Compaña Maritima building as maritime museum. The request was denied by the agency on the ground that it also has its own plan for the old building.  (FREEMAN)
