March is Women’s Month

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is urging the public to observe March as Women’s Month.

Underscoring the need to accelerate women’s participation in governance and enhance gender perspective in upholding good governance, this month’s celebration has the theme,  “Kababaihan: Gabay sa Pagtahak sa Tuwid  na Daan.” (Women as guide through the straight path.)

In a press statement, DSWD-7 Information Officer Jaybee Binghay said that this theme further  highlights the importance of strengthening the mechanisms and institutions that support women and to widen the arena for their participation.

It is also aligned with Section 11 (Participation and Representation) and Section 29 (Peace and Development)  of the Magna Carta for Women.

DSWD Field Office- 7 and the members of the Regional Technical Working Group lined up activities in connection with the celebration, which includes the holding of a Young Women leaders’ forum.

The DSWD-7 will also be  honoring top women leaders highlighting the specific accomplishments and contribution to women empowerment; and have exposure trips of women associations to different facilities and projects which have best practices of successful women.

Partner government and non-government agencies, local government units, private sector and civil society groups are enjoined to initiate local activities such as  seminars on women empowerment , trade fairs, exhibits, parades and motorcades, radio and TV guestings and the like to make this month’s celebration more colorful. — (FREEMAN)
