Repair of damaged portion of bridge to start very soon

AJ de la Torre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways is set to start the repair of the damaged part of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge when a dump truck rammed into it before falling off the bridge.

Wary of the traffic caused by the damage of the bridge, Acting Governor Agnes Magpale said that the repair needs to start immediately.

Magpale, the acting chairman of the Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board, said that DPWH instead will start the repair and will just bill the truck owner after.

The repair of the damage is estimated to cost P774,000, said Magpale. She said that the truck owner, Barangay Captain Remegio Oyao, was already informed about it.

Magpale said that the owner questioned the price quotation but was told the materials to be used are all imported.

She added that it would take time if they would wait for the truck owner to start the repair. The bridge will also be undergoing asphalt overlaying work by DPWH this week.

Last February 5, 60-year-old Fidel Lopez reportedly lost control of the truck’s steering wheel causing it to ram straight to the bridge’s railing consequently falling 20 feet down. (FREEMAN)
