Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Bureau of Customs launched yesterday their five-year strategic plan (2013-2017) during the culminating activity of their 111th Founding Anniversary celebration at the Malacañang sa Sugbo.

BOC Commissioner Ruffy Biazon led the ceremonial turnover of the project to Finance secretary Cesar Purisima.

The BOC Strategic Plan is a practical action-oriented guide, based on an examination of internal and external factors, which directs goal-setting and resource allocation to achieve meaningful results within a five-year period.

But Purisima suggested that the said plan should be materialized within the incumbency of President Benigno Aquino III, whose term will end in 2016.

The said special project envisioned a modernized and efficient customs administration that every Filipino can trust and be proud of.

Part of its mission is to assess and collect lawful revenues efficiently; to effectively curb illicit trade and all forms of customs fraud; to facilitate trade in a secured manner; to implement relevant technology for an efficiency and effective customs management aligned with international customs best practices and to promote professionalism and integrity in the service.

In yesterday’s event, which was attended by all customs officials and port stakeholders nationwide, BOC awarded eight collection districts all over the country for meeting the 2012 target collection.

These are the ports of Surigao, Legaspi, Tacloban, Iloilo, Clark, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu.

The ports of Legaspi, Clark and Davao also received special awards for consistently meeting its target collection within the five-year period from 2008 to 2012.

BOC also awarded top 20 importers for 2012. However, of the 20, only 17 importers received the awards here as the three others (who were not mentioned during the awarding) will be awarded at a different event.

The 17 importers are: Petron Corporation, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., Toyota Motors Phils. Corp., Chevron Phils. Inc., Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Phoenix Petroleum Phils. Inc., Hyundai Resources Inc., Total Philippines Corp., Steel Asia Manufacturing Corp., Samsung Electronics Philippines Corp., Uni oil Petroleum Phils. Inc., Sea oil Phils.
