Ombuds to probe alleged use of gov’t vehicles

CEBU, Philippines - The Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas will look into the alleged use of government-owned vehicles in transporting supporters of One Cebu party from the towns to Fuente Osmeña to attend the prayer rally last Thursday.

Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas Pelagio Apostol said they can use media reports to start an investigation.

“Media reports can be used as basis for the investigation but we need documents and witnesses, too,” he said.

Liberal Party (LP) Cebu Chairman Hilario Davide III said it is unlawful to use government vehicles during rallies. 

“I deplore the use of government resources for what is clearly a partisan political activity,” Davide said adding that such acts are highly improper and illegal.

Government officials should handle taxes or people’s hard earned money with utmost care, he added.

Last Thursday, the supporters of One Cebu gathered at the Capitol to attend the prayer rally led by incumbent officials and aspiring candidates of the party.

Before the rally started, the supporters gathered in the Fuente Osmeña Circle wearing red t-shirt before they marched towards Capitol.

Lawyer Edgar Gica, LP’s spokesperson, said they have documented the alleged use of vehicles with red plates in bringing people to Fuente Osmeña.

Apostol told the reporters that government-owned vehicles are for official use only but he did not issue further comments on the issue to avoid being branded as bias. — /MBG (FREEMAN)
