Jail “mayor” replaced, moved to separate cell

CEBU, Philippines - The designated leader of all cell leaders inside the Cebu City Jail was already replaced by his 23-year-old assistant leader in an election conducted by prisoners last Sunday.

Jail Warden Johnson Calub identified Jaylloyd Yares, who replaced Ariel

“Bobong” Degamo, 32, as “mayor de mayores” of the jail. Degamo was also transferred to a secure cell.

“Naa man gud kuno’y plano nga mubalos ang pikas so gibutang lang una namo siya sa laing selda. (We heard there are plans that the other party will seek revenge so we just placed him in a separate cell),” Calub told The FREEMAN.

The Cebu City Jail also conducted a thorough investigation of the incident. They are yet to determine the bladed instrument used.

Calub added that the victims, Alinor “Brix” Andingan and Michael Sansan, are now recuperating at the Cebu Doctor’s Hospital.

Degamo, from Misamis Oriental, reportedly asked another inmate to call Andingan, from Marawi City, to the third floor of the building.

Upon arrival at the said area, Andingan and Degamo had a heated altercation before Degamo repeatedly stabbed Andingan in different parts of his body.

Sansan, sustained four stab wounds for trying to pacify the two amid the commotion just before the jail officers arrived.

Calub said Degamo and Andingan had previous personal grudges which the jail authorities are investigating.

Calub, however, denied the alleged jailbreak and said they did not find proof of such.

They are also yet to decide the sanction to impose against Degamo and revealed that they are willing to assist the family of the victims if they will file appropriate charges against Degamo.

Calub said that depending on the outcome of the investigation, they are eyeing the possible filing of frustrated homicide or frustrated murder charges.— /MIT (FREEMAN)
