CEBU, Philippines - Tejero barangay officials are asking the help of the members of the Cebu City Council about the environmental problem in their place contributed by the ongoing construction of a giant mall along the Don Bernardo Benedicto Street at the North Reclamation Area (NRA) near the old White Gold.
Barangay Captain Jessielou Cadungog asked the City Council’s committee on environment headed by Councilor Nida Cabrera to conduct an ocular inspection at the ongoing construction of a Robinsons’ Mall because some of their constituents are already complaining of cough and other related diseases due to the dust that come from the construction site.
A resident along Sergio Osmeña Avenue formerly McArthur Boulevard told The FREEMAN that some of the cargo trucks hauling earth materials from the construction site passing the T. Padilla Extension are also violating the policy requiring drivers to cover their cargoes.
“Gawas nga abog kaayo, ang karsada mosamot kaguba tungod sa dagko kaayong trak de karga nga magbalik-balik paghakut sa mga lapok gikan sa construction site,” a certain Toto of McArthur Boulevard said. (Aside from the dust, the roads are also damaged because of the trucks hauling materials from the site.)
Cadungog said at present, the environment of that place is no longer healthy and some of his constituents are already complaining of chest pains and coughs, especially the children.
The lot presently developed by the Robinsons used to be owned by the City of Cebu but it was sold a few years ago.
During the City Council’s session last Wednesday, the city legislators referred the matter to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) for further action and for their recommendation. —JPM (FREEMAN)
