CEBU, Philippines — During this pandemic, we rely on our doctors when we are sick. But when it’s the budget that’s in trouble, we have our wais moms to the rescue.

Pandemic or not, mothers are like trained economists. They just know what to do when it comes to having enough without paying more. Given the current situation, they can always rewrite their list of techniques to survive without hurting the family’s purse.

Here’s how they are able to achieve more for the family and still spend less:

1. Downsizing the grocery list

Since the family income has been reduced and the prices are all up, moms have to also cut the unnecessary buys and prioritize basic items that the family needs.

No more processed meat and junk food, for example. Fresh meat is cheaper and healthier. We already know that junk food is not.

Moms are also known to check the cabinets and fridges to see what items need to be replenished.

2. Going to the tiangge

Wais moms would rather buy fresh meat and vegetables at the local tiangge or wet market because they know that their P500 will buy them more than what they can get in the grocery stores. Moms know that the products here are cheaper than those sold in air-conditioned stores.

Also, mothers would always prefer fresh products for their families. It’s not only that, they can still haggle for a cheaper price so they could get more from their budget. A real wais mom, they say, always uses her haggling powers.

3. Adjusting the market trips

Apart from the fact that it’s still pandemic, wais moms know that for every trip to the market means transportation money and more money to pay for the grocery. To cut on these expenses, wais moms do the grocery run once a week.

They don’t go to the grocery without thoroughly checking first what the household needs for the next seven days. When they’re done, they tuck their 10-year-old ecobags, the meticulously prepared grocery list in their pocket and zoom their way to the nearest grocery store with the cheapest items on sale.

4. Rationing the stock

After doing the groceries, wais moms know what day the family has to eat pork, and what day they should prepare Utan Bisaya.

The next three days they would usually serve vegies they bought from the tiangge. Vegies first as they easily get spoiled. Wais mothers will also serve hot soups made of pork cubes or chicken slices and vegies. These are healthy yet cheap.

This way wais mothers can stretch the few kilos of meat products they bought from the tiangges for the entire week.

5. Choosing affordable, quality products

Wais moms do not just buy cheap products because they are cheap. They do it because these tried-and-tested products, even though half the cost of others, can deliver quality performance just the same.

For instance, moms will always choose Surf products from the many brands in the detergent section. This is because for many years, Surf has not compromised the quality of its detergent albeit affordable.

No wonder wais moms will always have Surf Active Clean in their grocery carts. Not only is it swak with their budget, it also has Active Clean Technology! Now, Surf Powder Active Clean is even better in cleaning and whitening clothes, and gives an even more fragrant smell with its best-ever fragrance!

So wais mom, switch now to Surf Active Clean, your 'sing galing ng mamahalin detergent, may best-ever fragrance na rin!
