Itchy

Dear Dr. Jen,

I always have itchy legs. I don’t know why it is always on my legs. I have dark scars from previous itchies and new bumps still come up all the time. They don’t seem like mosquito bites. And fungal creams don’t work.  What do you think causes the rashes?

Mari

Dear Mari,

Itchy rashes on the legs can be several things.  The most common condition that may present with itchiness on the lower legs is atopic dermatitis or eczema. Atopic dermatitis is basically a condition of very dry and sensitive skin.  Using papaya or other whitening, exfoliating or anti-bacterial soap dries up the skin on the arms and legs. Shifting to mild, fragrance-free washes or soap can make a huge difference to your skin.

Additionally, investing in a good hypoallergenic lotion to maintain on a daily basis is also beneficial to eczematous skin. This will provide moisture and a barrier to other irritants.  For very itchy skin not relieved by moisturizers, steroid lotions may be needed.  Applying these anti-inflammatory lotions can calm the skin and take away the urge to scratch.
