CEBU, Philippines – No doubt about it, Sinulog is a great opportunity for everyone to have fun – the grownups and the kids alike. The whole family loves to go out there and be part of the action. But there are certain things to keep in mind.
Take only food and drinks from home.
The safest food is always the one prepared at home. And, especially in joining the Sinulog Grand Parade, it will be difficult to break away from the thick crowd in order to buy food from nearby eateries. The roadside food stalls may be the most accessible – but the food there are mostly displayed open to dust and other airborne particles. It is best to bring sandwiches and drinking water or juices from home.
Drink plenty of water. Take frequent sips of clean drinking water while out under the sun. In the middle of the Sinulog festivities, it is possible to not notice getting thirsty. Water intake is very important in order to avoid becoming dehydrated.
Have protection from the hot sun. A hat, an umbrella, sunglasses and even sunblock lotion are very useful for protection from the harmful rays of the sun. Make sure to have these handy are the family goes out to the Sinulog Grand Parade or to attend the other fun daytime events. The sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. is harmful to the skin and eyes.
Keep around Mom and Dad or grownup family members. Always cling to your parents and older siblings when in the midst of the crowd. It is so easy for small children to get lost among so many people. So it is good the little ones must always hold the hand of an adult family member.
Do not talk to strangers. Aside from a short, friendly greeting, it is not advisable for kids to be talking to people they don’t know. In case someone asks a child for some information, it is better to refer it to a grownup family member.
Overall, safety is top priority. The kids’ eagerness to join in the festivities shall be tempered with caution. The fun is more memorable if everybody comes home safe and sound afterwards.
