Glimpses of a nurturing love

CEBU, Philippines – Love is at the heart of an art exhibit that’s currently on display at the Paseo Marina of the Ayala Center Cebu. The exhibit features 10 watermedia pieces by Cebuana painter Golda King.

Titled “Nurture,” the show has an overall tone and intention that steers clear from corrosive social commentaries that often delve into the ephemeral aspects of romance and romancing. Instead, it provides a pleasant respite from angst-riddled art façades by focusing on the purity and sincerity of motherly love.

Using muted shades and pastels, King portrays various scenes that capture the essence of a mother’s nurturing love – intimate, never-showy.

Applying infusions of art nouveau and linear painting elements into her works, the collection bears Golda King’s brand of “suprematism,” a modernist creative movement that focuses on the utilization of geometric forms and a certain range of colors in conveying the sentiments and intentions.

In a time when artists are making it a point to be beside the point with their works, King – through representational and suprematist compositions – manages to craft pieces that exude primacy and purity of feeling, without being too simplistic with what she has to say.

This common denominator of King’s creative oeuvre matches with the encompassing theme of “Nurture,” her first solo show, without necessarily restricting the creative possibilities of the young Cebuana talent. The exhibit opened on October 19 and is ongoing until tomorrow, October 30.
