As The Heat Rages On
CEBU, Philippines - March really upholds its notoriety as the "fire" month. In these past few days alone, there has been a number of fires in the city, including grass fires. As we know, it's actually the "Fire Prevention Month," probably named so because of the observed high incidence of fires during the month.
Given that summer is starting any day soon, the dry, hot days are not likely to relent. In fact, all the more people must be careful and conscious of fire safety. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) continues to give tips on preventing fires and how to act should there be one.
A high-ranking BFP official, in an appearance on national television, gave a rundown of the things to always remember, not just during Fire Prevention Month but every day of the year:
.Avoid smoking while getting gas.
.Refrain from being near or using fire when inspecting gas tanks, radiators, or batteries.
.Have a portable fire extinguisher in the car.
.Frequently check the car's wiring insulation to prevent short circuits.
.Do not throw away cigarette that is still lit; before throwing away cigarette, make sure it is properly stubbed out.
.Avoid smoking inside the house, especially on the sofa or the bed.
.Have an ashtray or ashtraysinside your home, just to be ready.
.Follow "No Smoking" signs.
.Frequently check electrical installations at home.
.Have a licensed electrician repair broken or old electrical wiring.
.Do not replace a broken fuse with coins, cable or other types of metals.
.Before leaving the house, make sure all appliances are unplugged.
.Do not run in case your clothes catch fire; roll on the ground while covering your face in putting the fire out.
.Avoid keeping highly flammable objects - such as gasoline, alcohol, or paint - inside the house.
.Always have a First Aid kit around.
.Post a copy of the nearest fire stations' phone numbers by the home or office phone.
.Throw away papers and other combustible materials that are not to be used anymore, or else tuck them away safely.
.In case of fire, it is important to stay calm, and take the appropriate actions - especially trying to get away from the fire scene.
It is true: Prevention is always the best position. It pays to remember always that slight slips can cause big losses. A fire often results in significant loss of property - and even of lives.
