DOST offers training for high school grads

CEBU, Philippines - In order to address the negative impact of brain drain to the country's Metals and Engineering industry, the Metals Industry and Research Development Center (MIRDC) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is implementing a training program for high school graduates.

Dubbed as  “Human Resource Intervention for Sustainable Growth and Competitiveness of the Metals and Engineering Sector: Development and Implementation of Appropriate Training Curriculum Design for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine Tool Programming and Operations”, the program hopes to attract 800 participants nationwide to be trained as CNC machinists.

To qualify, participants must have graduated from highschool with mechanical skills, units in college or TESDA / similar accreditations is an advantage and preferably with basic knowledge and skills in conventional machining (turning or milling) and basic computer operation.

The 62-day training program is segmented into three parts: Part 1 – Basic and Common Competencies; Part 2 – Core Competency; and Part 3 – Industry Immersion.

For unemployed participants, the training is provided for free, plus a daily allowance of P300 will be given to help defray their cost of living while attending the training. As for employed participants, a minimal training fee of P10,000 will be charged.

Interested participants are required to submit the following to the DOST Region VII Office located in Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City: (1) Personal Information Sheet (click DOWNLOADS menu of the DOST website found at: www.ro7.dost.gov.ph); (2) Transcript of Records; (3) Diploma / Certification; (4) Barangay Clearance; (5) Community Tax Certificate; (6) Medical Certificate; and (7) Recent Passport Size Photo.

Deadline of submission of applications is on February 21, 2014.

Successful trainees are required to sign a 3-year Service Contract  in the Philippines after the training. (FREEMAN)
