Mama Meling turns 98

PEOPLE PLACES - Flor S. YNCLINO - The Freeman

Seldom if at all, in this era of high technology, and fast food, social media and whatever, can a person have hope of reaching 98. But Doña Milagros "Mama Meling" Lago Salimbangon stayed strong, inspired to climb the ladders, and had some nice long talks with her wishing stars. And most of all, with the Almighty God!

When she turned 98, New York was reminiscing the 9-11 catastrophe. But Mama Meling's children led by Congressman Benhur and Janice with Cesar and Fely, Mariquita and Carlos Yeung, Danila and Ulpa, and Edwin and Edna honored their beloved mother with a big celebration on her birthday and had a Filipiniana motif. This was preceded with a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Msgr. Roberto "Boy" Alesna together with Msgr. Dodong Ullamot and Msgr. Jimboy Gorre at the Villa's chapel. After the Mass, the celebrator emerged in a red, fully beaded kimona over red pants.

Sumptuous dinner over, a musicale hosted by Sam Costanilla ensued which the honoree actually wanted so much. The program started with the BCMFI group headed by chair Kit, presenting the Itik-Itik followed with the sons of the honoree doing the Bagul-Bagul dance; Boogie by Michel and Amparito Lhuillier; Greg and Agnes Huettel did the rock and roll; and a lot of numbers by the grandchildren, all under the tutorship of Val Sandiego.

In lieu of a short thank you message, Mama Meling sang her favorite Spanish song "Era" that delighted all the guests. For the grand old festejada, her 98th birthday celebration was her happiest one ever! PTL!
