CEBU, Philippines - More than 500 players hailing from different parts of the country took part in the recently staged eSports Festival 2013 - Philippine National Qualifier, living up to is goals in being one of the biggest electronic sporting events to take place in the city.
Held in the SM City Cebu Trade Hall last August 23 to 25, the three-day event gathered the best StarCraft II, League of Legends, Alliance of Vanguard Arms (AVA), Tekken Tag 2, DOTA and DOTA 2 players in one venue, besting each other out in tourney-elimination rules.
Highlighting the Philippine National Qualifier for the International e-Sports Federation World Championship 2013 as part of its three-day itinerary, the top players of the event’s AVA and League of Legends playoffs will be competing in this year’s e-Sports Federation World Championship in Bucharest, Romania on October 31 to November 4, 2013.
Organized by the Philippine e-Sports Organization (PeSO) and presented by Friendster, NG Khai, NGenius and Razer, in cooperation with SM City Cebu, Cyberzone, PLDT and Arcansys, the event also highlighted free play areas for visitors and participants, World of Tanks demos, a Cosplay Contest, a Photography Competition, and a Cheap Rigs-presented Computer Rig Exhibition.
Last year, the national qualifier held in SM City Cebu’s NorthWing on August 25 to 26 gathered more than 350 players from different parts of the country.
This year’s more than 500 participants says something about how e-Sports and e-Sporting events are gaining traction as a phenomenon in the Philippines, with PeSO keen on being the arbiter for the standardization of e-Sports conventions and norms in the country. By Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi
