Going Dental

CEBU, Philippines - From abutment to veneers, the field of dentistry has its own set of terms and jargons, a body of technical definitions which everyone is not exactly privy to.

Here’s a quick take on ten of the more commonly encountered dental terms everyone should take the time to know.

Calculus – not to be mistaken with the subject dreaded by high schoolers all over the world, the “dental context” of the term calculus refers to the calcium-like deposits that build up on teeth, generally caused by the accumulation of plaque. More popularly called “tartar”, the term is essentially another word for calcified plaque.

Caries – while many would be quick in branding “caries” as a typo, it actually is a real dental term, one which refers to dental infections caused by the presence/buildup of bacteria. It is also used in referring to “tooth decay” or tooth cavity cases.

Composite and Amalgam Fillings – “pasta” would be the vernacular translation of fillings, with both composite and amalgam fillings defined as restorative materials used in repairing damaged teeth.

Composite filings are essentially restorative materials made up of ceramic or glass particles, which are hardened or “cured” as part of their successful utilization. Amalgam fillings, as opposed to composite fillings, are generally composed of silver, tin, copper, zinc and/or mercury combinations.

Crown – also popularly referred to as a “cap”, a crown (in terms of dental procedures) is a restorative option for repairing damaged teeth, usually composed of either porcelain, metal or composite materials. As a term used in defining the part or portion of a tooth though, the crown points to the area of a tooth above the gum line.

Endodontics – the term endodontics is not exactly a dental procedure, nor is it a part of the tooth. It is a specialty in the field of dentistry, one which focuses on treating dental cases which affect the nerves or the root tips of a tooth. Root Canal Treatments would be the forte of endodontics specialists.

Oral Prophylaxis – more than just the act of brushing one’s teeth, the term oral prophylaxis refers to the procedure where the scaling and polishing of tooth surfaces is involved, usually geared for cleaner and brighter teeth. “Cleaning” would be its more popular alternative term.

Orthodontics – just like endodontics, orthodontics refers to a specialization in the dentistry field, focusing on the “straightening” of misaligned teeth. Typically, orthodontics specialists make use of dental braces, retainers and other devices in resolving misaligned teeth-related concerns.

Periodontist – a periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the supporting structures of teeth, including the gums and the bones.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) – As a condition, TMJ is typically associated with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), which is essentially a condition that involves the lower jaw. A restricted capacity to open one’s jaw is characteristic of the condition, along with a “popping” or “clicking” tone being heard when one opens or closes his/her jaw.

Veneers/Laminates – veneers or laminates are typically used in cosmetic dental procedures, oftentimes implemented for better teeth appearance. Generally composed of porcelain and plastic components, veneers are also utilized in reinforcing/replacing cases of lost tooth structure, as well as improve tooth color or tonal shade.
