No Difference

CEBU, Philippines - As the second featured exhibition of the new Qube Gallery at The Henry Hotel, No Difference delves into the inner-workings of an age-old adage, one which says something about the overall nature of art – there really is no such thing, only artists.

Showcasing more than 35 art pieces made by the country’s top artistic talents, the show takes a declarative stance in saying that there is no difference in standing between individual visual ideals, thoughts and sentiments in the arena of the arts, with each artistic view having its own weight and value in the realms of artistic expression and exploration.

Working on Qube’s non-inhibiting operational philosophy as a gallery, No Difference is not exactly positioned as an analogy against established artistic norms and status quos, but rather takes its time in presenting the different past and present trends which have become the kingmakers of art’s vast and growing landscape.

From abstract expressionist-themed pieces to surrealist-inspired works, the show goes deeper than the eye candy value many associate with the arts, compelling its viewers to look beyond what can be evidently seen.

Peter James Fantinalgo’s “Dove Series 2” and “Dove Series 3”, two of No Difference’s featured pieces, easily accomplishes this goal with its playful manipulation of compositional perspective and physical form, an artistic feat which the artist consistently does so well.

“In Quiet Anticipation” by Jo Anne Gancita, another featured No Difference piece, combines the base principles of composition and process oriented works, yielding to a unique visual tableau that is both representational and non-representational in capturing the often-met emotions and sentiments in anticipation and longing.

Junjun Montelibano’s “True Flight”, another stand-out No Difference piece, takes a playful approach in achieving its visual ideals, with a character-driven aspect that tells a story in imparting its message.

“The Fall of a Star” by Roderik Tijing and “Candy Woman” by Jay-r Delleva, though different from each other in terms of technique and style, both take a stab in the exploration of how contemporary portraits can be made without being too overly literal in their execution.

In gathering an eclectic selection of works, No Difference proudly stands out as another Qube Gallery-presented exhibition, continuing its tradition of causing progressive shifts in Cebu’s artistic landscape, paying its due respect to the artistic legacies of the past, at the same time being immersed in the now.
