Nifty Shades of Grey

CEBU, Philippines - There’s a sublime quality to Nifty Shades of Grey – the 2nd group exhibition organized by the recently formed special interest group Monochrome Magick – one which leads viewers into asking what really lies in the mask behind facades.

Currently on exhibit in Qube Gallery Persimmon Plus, the show celebrated its opening last July 11, gathering more than a hundred black and white images captured by a number of Cebu’s on-the-rise and established photojournalists and photography pros, each dedicated in telling stories through images without the diffidence and pandemonium of colors.

Taking the time in recanting the qualifiers that define superb images from the rest, the show’s featured photographs collectively work though an effective amalgam of composition and light, giving significant dimension to the “draw with light” origin of the word photography.

With no all-encompassing theme inhibiting its participating photographers, the show manages to steer clear from being a mish-mash of random images gathered in one venue, with its overall vision as an exhibit bearing a lyrical tone that borders on the threshold of reverie and silence – a quality that works to the Nifty Shades of Grey’s advantage.

Not clawing for relevance, the show essentially bares the true bravado in the practice of capturing images sans the at times pretentious nature of colors, a trait that isn’t always found in Cebu’s range of photography exhibitions.

While a number of its featured photographs delves into stories of triumph and tragedy, Nifty Shades of Grey – as a whole – is not just about commentaries on the signs of the times or montages to what is beautiful,  but is also about overall the nature of artistic creation in capturing images and stills.
