Upland residents surrender more unlicensed firearms
CEBU, Philippines — At least 24 firearms have been surrendered to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) City Mobile Force Company by residents from the city’s mountain barangays in the latest wave of the police initiative called “Oplan Tungsten.”
The measure seeks to decrease the number of illegal or unregistered firearms in the city, according to Cebu City Police Office Director Colonel Engelbert Soriano.
The initiative specifically targets 10 upland barangays, namely Babag, Bonbon, Binaliw, Sapangdaku, Toong, Budlaan, Pamutan, Malubog, Buot, and Pulangbato.
Among the firearms surrendered were three .22 caliber revolvers, 11 .38 caliber revolvers, five .357 caliber revolvers, 6 .45 caliber pistols, one 5.56 caliber improvised pistol, two 5.56 caliber frontiers, ibe 5.56 caliber rifle, one 12GA shotgun, two 12GA improvised shotgun, one 7.62 caliber BASR, and one M1 Carbine.
CCPO headquarters will take temporary custody of the firearms pending orders from Camp Crame as to how these will be destroyed.
“We will safe keep until such time that we will get orders from higher headquarters on the proper disposal of it,” said Soriano of the guns.
According to CMFC Commander Police Lieutenant Colonel Randy Korret, they have received reports on many firearms in the upland barangays that are not licensed. JMD (FREEMAN)
