Luna Awards levels up in choice of nominees
A big change is coming at this year’s Luna Awards. If you are wondering what Luna Awards is, you are probably too young to know about the groups that give out awards in the local film industry.
The Luna Awards is the counterpart of the Oscar Awards in Hollywood. This is also referred to as the industry award since the members of the Film Academy of the Philippines are the ones who watch, nominate and vote for their peers.
By the way, Star Circuit would like to congratulate Ms. Vivian Velez, the new Deputy Director General of the Film Academy of the Philippines or FAP.
The Luna Awards just released their list of nominees to this year’s awards rites. To be fair, Luna Awards has a good lineup of nominees. Their choices seemed to have leveled up. In previous ceremonies, the Luna Awards always get a lot of criticism about their nominees and choice of winners.
Some showbiz observers have this feeling or inkling that the Electoral College of the FAP are not taking seriously their jobs of selecting the nominees and eventual winners. There seemed to be a veiled vested interest involved in selecting the victors.
Gone were the days when the truly deserving nominees get their fair share of awards. But looking at the lineup of nominees this year, it looks like the Electoral College did their homework right and came up with a credible list of nominees.
They seem to be bent in bringing back the prestige that the Luna Awards deserve.
Listed below are some of the nominees in several categories:
For Best Supporting Actress, the nominees are Aiko Melendez (Rainbow’s Sunset), Daria Ramirez (Single Rock), Max Collins (Citizen Jake), Nova Villa (Miss Granny), and Sunshine Dizon (Rainbow’s Sunset).

The Aguinaldo Cup 2019, a sports festival spearheaded by Kawit Mayor Angelo Emilio Aguinaldo, was launched last Saturday with the participation of some of the country’s biggest stars during the ceremonial celebrity basketball tournament held at the Tanggulan Arena in the town of Kawit, province of Cavite.
The stars who participated in the exhibition game were Jason Abalos, Mark Herras, Axel Torres, Juancho Trivino, Marco Gumabao, Gab Lagman, Ervic Vijandre and Onyok Velasco.
The exhibition game kicked off the basketball tournament in the town which will be participated in by the 23 barangays in Kawit.
Mayor Aguinaldo said that basketball being the country’s favorite past time, has ignited a lot of enthusiasm in the barangays. “We know that the youth’s involvement in sports can be one of the great deterrents to crime and drugs. We want the youth of Kawit to be engaged in more productive activities like this.”
The celebrity basketball team battled a selection composed of young basketball players in Kawit known as Kawit All Star which won by one point over the visiting celebrity basketball quintet.
Proceeds from the exhibition game will be donated in full to the victims of the deadly earthquakes that rocked the province of Cotabato recently.
Gab, whose dream is to be a basketball player, said he always says yes to invitations to play basketball, especially if it’s for a good cause. “I not only enjoy playing more but the thought that you will be able to help other people inspires me to give my best,” said Gab who was last seen in the ABS-CBN series “Halik.”
