DTI pushes for AI in businesses

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) advocated for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance economic competitiveness, which will benefit the growth of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 12 percent, amounting to approximately $92 billion by 2030.

In the recently concluded ‘Padayon Cebu: Enabling Cebu’s Competitiveness Through Digital Transformation and Innovation’ forum, DTI Undersecretary for Competitiveness and Innovation Rafaelita M. Aldaba shared the significance of AI as a transformative technology that improves various sectors of businesses.

The forum, which is one of the highlights of this year’s Cebu Business Month, was

held at the Seda Ayala Center Cebu on June 20 2024.

Aldaba believes that AI not only reduces the costs for business owners but also enhances efficiency and foster innovation by enabling the creation of new products, services, and business models.

On May 5, 2021, the DTI launched the National AI Strategy Roadmap, an initiative to position the country as a major hub for big data processing, offering high-value data analytics and AI services globally.

Aldaba shared the prediction that the impact of AI will result in generating $79.3 billion, 50 percent of which will be from the manufacturing, retail, and wholesale trade sectors.

She, however, acknowledged the negative effects of AI but emphasized the responsible use of it, saying, “...what we are advocating has always been the use of AI for good. More responsible (use of) AI.”

The primary goal of this advocacy is to uplift the lives of Filipinos, improve productivity, and enhance economic competitiveness.

Aldaba added that with the existence of AI in companies, there is also a need for upskilling and reskilling the workforce through collaborations with the academe. — Renee Ross Villariasa, CNU Intern (FREEMAN)
