CCCI, AFOS Foundation empower Bantayan Island via FISH Visayas

CHAMBER BEAT - The Freeman

In a concerted effort to empower the Sulangan Panitugan Planters Association (SPPA) and Luyong Baybay Fisherfolks Association (LUFFA) in Bantayan Island, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), in partnership with the AFOS Foundation through the FISH VISAYAS PROJECT conducted the 2-day financial literacy training from August 29 to 31 in Bgry. Suba, Bantayan Island, Cebu.

Inspired from BFAR’s Fish N’ Learn Program, the training immersed 60 fisherfolks in real-life scenarios of a fisherman vis-à-vis financial capability. Topics covered included budgeting, saving, debt management, and strategies for additional income generation. Led by Ms. Evelyn Catanda of BFAR Region VII, the training capacitated and empowered our fisherfolks for an informed, and better financial decisions, as a crucial step towards financial resiliency.

Simultaneously, a Post-implementation Evaluation (PIE) for the Solid Waste Management program known as “Basura Hipusa, Kahimsug Panggaa” (BAKHAP) in collaboration with the CCCI Bantayan Island Chapter and the Local Government Unit of Bantayan was conducted through a focus group discussion with the key stakeholders. The BAKHAP program was initiated to reduce solid waste by empowering citizens on proper waste management practices and introducing the “takus-takus” system. The program’s success in eight initial barangays led to its adoption by the LGU and other communities.

The post-implementation evaluation assessed the BAKHAP program’s efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability in achieving its intended outcomes in a cost-effective and resource-efficient manner. It also aimed to identify challenges and areas for improvement, providing valuable insights for future initiatives.

The Fostering Inclusive and Sustainable Habitats (FISH) Visayas Project is gaining ground across Cebu and Central Visayas s as it seeks to improve the income situation of fisheries-dependent families, as well as MSMEs along the Fisheries and related Food value chains and make this sustainable
